How do you start a story about a period that brought both immense frustration and life-changing clarity? Sharing this feels vulnerable, but it is essential to understanding who I am today and why I choose to work the way I do.
The Turning Point
In early 2023, what should have been a routine minor procedure took an unexpected turn. Complications during anesthesia left me with persistent back pain, nerve issues, and a significantly diminished physical capacity.
For someone whose life and work are defined by movement—hiking through forests, tracking wildlife, and documenting outdoor stories—this was a devastating blow. My world is outside, yet my body was forcing me to stay in. It was a confrontation with my own boundaries that I never saw coming.
The Search for Essence
What followed was a long, intensive search for recovery. I explored every avenue: physical therapy, ergotherapy, personal training, and psychological support. While each step offered a piece of the puzzle, the constant pain remained.
In 2025, I committed to a specialized rehabilitation program at Het Roessingh. This wasn't just about physical strength; it was about "painless" living and learning to manage energy. I learned the hard way that I don’t always have to be 'on.' I learned that the world doesn't stop when I turn off my laptop, and that taking a seat during a long shoot isn't a sign of weakness—it’s a strategy for longevity.
From Recovery to Mastery
This period of forced stillness became the catalyst for my creative shift. It was during my recovery that I moved away from "perfect" commercial photography and embraced the 50mm 1.4 lens. I found beauty in the grain, the blur, and the quiet moments. I realized that my best work happens when I am grounded, patient, and deeply connected to the environment.
I traded the rush for the rhythm of the seasons. I picked up gardening, baking, and embroidery—hobbies that taught me the value of slow, intentional craft. These lessons now flow directly into my photography.
Looking Ahead: Back in the Field
If you are reading this in 2026 or beyond, know that this journey is now part of my foundation. The intensive rehabilitation is behind me, and I have emerged stronger, more focused, and fully available for commissions.
I have built a sustainable way to work with chronic pain, ensuring that I can give my full energy and creativity to every project I take on. I am back in the woods, back on the trail, and ready to document your story.
Currently, I am focusing on:
Brand Expeditions: Visual storytelling for outdoor labels and sustainable brands.
Documentary Reports: Capturing the lives of gamekeepers, shepherds, and foresters.
Book Projects: I have a deep desire to collaborate on publications involving nature, foraging, or biodiversity.
Outdoor Portraits: Authentic sessions for those who feel most at home in the wild.
My journey hasn't "cured" me, but it has refined me. It taught me to choose quality over quantity and truth over perfection.
Are you ready to head out? Let’s capture something real.
